Photographers and ophthalmologists often share an appreciation for manual dexterity and a passion for fine tools. Descending from a long line of physicians and surgeons, I inherited not only the passion but also some tools of the trade left behind by four generations of doctors. These implements, once practical, now obsolete, remain beautiful in design and structure, more suitable for display than utility, but once were the tools of diagnostic and surgical miracles.
